SLUMBERJACK

Since breaking onto the Australian electronic music scene in 2014, Morgan Then (a Borneo-bred, classically trained concert pianist and former world-music artist) and Fletcher Ehlers (a Vietnam-raised Australia native who taught himself to make electronic music at age 11) have tapped into their kinetic chemistry to guide their sound in a new direction. With their synergy stronger than ever — and over 620,000+ monthly listeners on Spotify now under their belt — SLUMBERJACK have wrapped up their SARAWAK Tour in North America and Australia.

In the past year Perth-based duo SLUMBERJACK have brought their music to new heights on their newest EP SARAWAK, turning out massive bass-heavy collaborations like “Solid” with TroyBoi and “Closure” with Ekali, which pushed their total streams to over 60 million across all platforms. The inspiration for the EP came from the duo’s decision to travel somewhere that was familiar to Morgan from his upbringing and extremely foreign to Fletch: SARAWAK in Borneo, Malaysia. Somewhere they could spend time living fully in the present, experiencing the natural beauty of the rainforest and sampling the unique sounds of the jungles, caves and traditional instruments they came across. The result was a fitting follow-up to their 2017 Fracture EP, which debuted as iTunes Australia’s #1 electronic album.

“The goal has always been to write music that’s so different from everything else we’ve done and to explore new genres, new sounds and new instruments.” In regards to the group’s shows Ehlers adds, “There should be moments where you just absorb something ugly or unusual, and then get the payoff later when you experience something beautiful. We don’t want to just have people going crazy the whole time — we want to give them a show that takes them on some kind of a journey.”
